Plumbing problems in a residential home can be a common occurrence or may be complex. A home has all types of plumbing ranging from sinks to toilets and other water outlets. A home owner needs to keep their plumbing properly maintained to prevent serious issues from occurring. However, the plumbing in a home may also fail or develop a problem which will need to be addressed. Plumbing issues in a home occur for many reasons.

Clogged Drains

Clogged drains often occur in a home for many reasons. One of the most common ways for clogs to appear in a drain is due to grease and hair. Various other substances can also be sent down plumbing pipes that can cause a clog. The toilet in a bathroom is another type of drain that may develop a clog when paper other than toilet paper is flushed. Tissue and paper towel are products that are not meant to be flushed down the toilet because they do not decompose in water. Most clogs that occur may be fixed by using a plunger. However, a plumber may be needed for clogs that are severe.

Leaking Faucet

Faucets can develop leaks sue to the parts that wear out over time. Calcium can also build up on the aerator and block the flow of water. Faucets that are leaking may have a bad o-ring or another issue that needs to be addressed. Many times a common fix is to simply clean the aerator.

Hot Water Heater

Water heaters in a home that are old or reaching the end of their lifespan can develop a leak. One of the main reasons for leaks in a water heater is due to corrosion. Homes with hard water will contain calcium and other minerals. These compounds can start to corrode the lining of the tank and lead to leaking water. Most issues with a hot water heater can be corrected by an experienced plumber. The most common solution for water heater problems is to flush the tank.

Damaged Pipes

Plumbing pipes in a home can become damaged for many reasons. This includes bursting due to the freezing that occurs during the winter. The bursting or plumbing pipes is often common with homes that are older and do not have updated plumbing. Older pipes in a home or pipes that have a buildup of calcium and minerals often develop pinhole leaks. Pinhole leaks in water pipes can cause mold or mildew that may not be seen by a homeowner.

Garbage Disposals

Homeowners who have a garbage disposal in their kitchen may have issues develop over time. This includes putting an item of food or other material that is not suited for a garbage disposal. If there is a garbage disposal that has not been used for a long period of time, then the unit may rust. This may lead to an issue with water leaking from the base of the unit. A plumber will need to remove the bad unit and install a new one to correct the problem.
